A Shiny app I made to search and analyze statements made by spokespeople for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA).
In the summer of 2020, I interned at the John L. Thornton China Center at the Brookings Institution. Part of my work involved tracking statements made by spokespeople at China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA), which meant that I had to go to their website and manually click through their daily press briefings and other materials to find key terms.
After a few days of doing this, I decided to scrape their statements and create an interactive database for myself. I used the scrapy Python package to collect the data, and R to clean the data and make a Shiny dashboard, which is embedded below:
